Case study

CE-Case-2381.gif (9566 bytes)Off-site construction doesn’t just mean transferring processes to a factory, as Armstrong Integrated Systems (AIS) discovered the hard way.

Fitters instinctively carried on as they did on site. Looking to manufacturing, AIS discovered the 5S tool that helped to change employees’ attitudes to factory jobs and instil a new sense of pride in the modules they were building. 3D modelling, also borrowed from manufacturing, has propelled step changes in productivity and customer service.

Report

schools.jpg (6075 bytes)Information overload is a common complaint among professionals grappling with seemingly endless initiatives.

Building Best Value Schools is a guide for everyone involved in building schools to pause, draw breath and decide what to do. It brings together best practice and points readers to publications that will help them to get the best value.

There are many stunning schools that could have been used to illustrate the booklet, but we thought bright, happy children would best grab the reader's attention and remind them what it's all about.

Web

ppc2000.gif (12152 bytes)Think ‘contracts’ (yawn…) but forget dull!

Turn on your PC's sound system, go to PPC2000.co.uk and then imagine a contract that takes the mystery out of project partnering.

PPC2000.co.uk is a new website from the Association of Consultant Architects (ACA). It shows how the ACA’s innovative partnering contracts give clients the best chance of realising their ambitions. And yield better outcomes for constructors, consultants and specialists.

Look here for hard facts and guidance on using ACA’s partnering contracts. Fiona Griffiths, ACA’s Secretary General, says: “Our market testing of the website confirmed what contract users wanted. We offer tasters, case studies, answers to common questions and other free downloads. Follow the links to the PPC2000 User Groups, accredited Partnering Advisers and training providers; there is no need to just believe what we say.”

Besides the radical multi-party project partnering contract PPC2000, you can also learn about the companion contract for specialists (SPC2000) and the GUIDE to effective partnering. A whole section is dedicated to TPC2005, the ACA’s new multi-party contract for term partnering.

“I congratulate the production team on the look and impact of this website,” says David Mosey, Head of the Projects and Construction Group at Trowers & Hamlins, authors of ACA’s family of partnering contracts. “The cartoon introduction is not what the construction industry expects of a legal topic, but the accessible content written in plain English certainly is.”

Toolkit - paper version

Rfp-toolbox.jpg (3615 bytes)Respect for People is sadly lacking in many work situations: how bosses treat employees, how workers behave towards colleagues and how customers' interests are neglected.

The construction industry has a particularly poor reputation as an unpleasant and unsafe environment, and this is affecting recruitment.

The Respect for People Toolkits were published in October 2002, following a two-year trial by construction organisations wanting to recruit and retain the best possible workforce, and reprinted to meet demand in May 2003.

We designed the toolkits with ease of use and sustainability in mind. The checklists include performance charts to see how an organisation measures up against the criteria concluded from the trial, together with pointers to help in dealing with particular issues. The whole kit, including the 'toolbox', is made of paper and card; there is no plastic.

Toolkit - online version

Local government is under sustained pressure to lift its game. Delivering ‘best value’ is the mantra, but ‘how’ is the question.

This toolkit gives step-by-step guidance on how to set up and run framework agreements. Although this toolkit was prepared with construction and maintenance work for local government in mind, the principles apply to procurement of any goods, services or works in the public sector and utilities generally. Users will need to check where variations from local government rules and procedures arise.

Ontimeandbudget.jpg (44311 bytes)Buildoffsite campaigns for the take up of off-site techniques in UK construction.

BROLGA made video 'adverts' for their exhibition stand, showing five compelling reasons to move construction away from chaotic sites to controlled conditions in factories.
